Introduction

Goal
The goal is to realise a set of "online self directed tutorials" on specific tools or strategies that are likely to be of interest to K-16 educators throughout the MENA region (and possibly beyond).

Time frame
We hope to have the first of these in place for the end of September 2014.

Method
To follow a basic format as follows.

  • Introduction to tutorials and how they work (generic)
  • What is (name of app or strategy)? (brief description of the tool and what pedagogical use it could have)
  • Why would I bother with (name of app or strategy)? (more detailed rationale for using it; a connection / demonstration of what has been done with it)
  • What do I need to get started using (name of app or strategy) (list of requirements - hardware; specifications; prerequisites - what needs to be learned or known prior?)
  • What can I do to realise something with (name of app or strategy)? (simple task to complete that demonstrates how to realise a tangible / useful project and with a screencasts library to show people how )
  • What obstacles got in my way of realising the project? (using an online form, solicit feedback from users on how difficult / easy it is to realise the simple project)
  • How do I earn recognition for my learning? (Badge) (outline the nature of an independent project that once completed, can be shared with others who take the module afterwards - showcase their work; outline where/ how it has been used with students; provide contact details for possible research followup; whatever is made MUST be available for sharing with others)
  • What surprises have you had? (a online discussion thread to share findings - good and bad about the (name of app or strategy)
  • How have I used my (name of app or strategy) project(s) with my students? (follow up on successful projects)
  • Where to go next?
  • Resources (bibliography; credits for who created what in the tutorial)

Take away for online tutorial designer
  • the realisation of an online tutorial
  • evidence of a professional contribution to one's peers in the Region and possibly beyond
  • recognition for one's professional contribution
  • an open digital badge that acknowledges the work of the online tutorial designer

Take away for participant
  • the realisation of a practical learning product ... one that demonstrates the pedagogical / technological aims of the tutorial and will be of use to them in their professional setting
  • the sharing of a learning product with peers for discussion
  • an open digital badge that acknowledges the work of the participant

Take away for the community
  • the sharing of learning products by participants allows others to
  • use & review learning products from past participants
  • discuss the strengths of the product, identify best practices
  • enhance a learning product that has already been posted
